Auditions for South Bend Civic Theatre's production of "The Nerd" will be held on Sunday, March 4th and Monday March 5th at 6pm.

Willum’s birthday party is about to get a jolt of excitement. Rick, a fellow ex-soldier who had saved Willum’s life in Vietnam (but who he actually never met) has decided to pop by for a visit. Delighted at first, Willum’s enthusiasm wanes when he finds out that Rick is not only socially inept, but also never plans to leave! Desperate to get him out of the house, Willum must hatch an outrageous plan to rid his life of this wacky GI who came to dinner!

Character Breakdowns

Willum Cubbert: Late 20’s, early 30’s. Architect. A fine and decent person who wants everyone around him to be happy. Not exactly a pushover, but not overly-assertive, either. He allows life to happen to him, rather than reaching out and grabbing what he wants.

Tansy McGinnis: Late 20’s, early 30’s. Local Weather Girl. Warm and almost maternal. Another fine and decent person, in love with Willum but determined to pursue her dreams of doing the weather in Washington DC.

Axel Hammond: Late 20’s, early 30’s. Drama critic for the local paper. Witty, sophisticated, and unsentimental. Probably amoral as well.

Warnock “Ticky” Waldgrave: Late 40’s, early 50’s. Self-made man. Has hired Willum to design a hotel for him. Stodgy, unimaginative, probably smokes cigars. Per the playwright, “The last time Waldgrave smiled was 47 years ago, and then it was gas.”

Clelia Waldgrave:  Late 40’s, early 50’s. Warnock’s wife. Well-bred but nervous, always on edge.  Per the playwright, “Clelia is a picture of tasteful, studied patience, but not because her life is devoid of anxiety.”

Thor Waldgrave: About 10. Warnock & Clelia’s late-in-life baby boy. This is the worst child ever born, and neither parent has a hope of controlling him. Per the playwright, “Thor is a monster.”

Rick Steadman: Late 20’s to mid 40’s.  Rick is the houseguest who can’t take a hint. We’re pretty sure his elevator doesn’t rise all the way to the top. He’s earnest and has no guile – and no social skills, and no appreciation of the affect he has on others.  In a word, he’s maddening. He seems to mean well, but everything he does and everything he says is just wrong.
