La Victoria explores the journey of Victoria, a Chilean-American playwright, who grew up in the slums of Santiago, Chile, during a brutal military dictatorship and who now lives in New York City. Under the 1973-1990 regime of Augusto Pinochet, Chile's most violent dictator, performing theatre that was not censored by the government was illegal and punishable by death. In utilizing theatre to denounce the government, evoking their freedom of speech and organization, Victoria’s family are wanted felons. Shifting between present and past, Victoria demonstrates to her daughter, Alejandra, how she survived a tumultuous and tragic series of events that led to her eventual exile to the United States.
