SYNOPSIS:

In one wild weekend, a Hispanic American family threatens to burst at the seams. The college-aged son brings home his “gringo” girlfriend; his flamboyant mother goes off in mad pursuit of her straying husband; and long-suffering Aunt Dolores sees the face of the Virgin in a tortilla—turning their New Jersey home into a media circus. As the Cruz family struggles with old and new beliefs and conflicts, the endurance of family love is revealed to be the true miracle.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Auditions are open to anyone who fits the description of the character. If you connect with a certain character but you do not fit the description, you can still audition, you might change our mind about how that character should look and act. No prior acting experience is required.

Dolores Cantu a Dominican woman in her mid 50’s. She had a thick Dominican accent. Very religious and a devoted Catholic, with a special place for the Virgin Mary in her heart.   She works really hard and her family (her sister Dahlia and her sons) are her everything. She is usually very optimistic and happy, always looking at the positive side of things.  Although it seems like she is very content with her life choices, there is sadness and she questions her life choices and if love has truly slipped away from her hands.

Dahlia Cruz Dolore’s sister in her late 40s. She has an accent but not as heavy as Dolores. Loves her kids but is very bitter because of a recent divorce from Pancho, her former husband.  She thinks she still loves him and wants him back.  She looks tired and is grumpy all the time. She thinks she has to prove to Pancho she is better than his current partner and pretends to act and dress younger, wear heavier make up and tease the hell out of her hair.  She has two sons and cares for them but her focus at this time is the status of her previous relationship with her husband.

Eddy Cruz – Dahlia’s oldest son.  He is in his mid/late-20s.  He is a free spirit and loves his freedom, very bohemian. He dresses very cool and hip with his hair greased up and pulled back.  He speaks English perfectly but adds the Dominican flavor and slang when speaking. He is a well known womanizer and has a rotating belt of women coming and going.  Although he tends to play the super confident macho persona, the papi chulo of the neighborhood, he is overcompensating for his lack of knowledge of the real world.  He tends to fall for get rich-quick schemes. He has a great relationship with mom and aunt but uses them for his advantage.  He does not have the best relationship with his brother Nelson because they are complete opposites.

Nelson Cruz – Dahlia’s youngest son.  He is in his early 20’s finishing college. He is much more uptight compared to Eddy. He is driven, book smart, a bit of a nerd.  He wears glasses, uses basic neutral khakis and polos.  He tries to fit in and blend with the majority.  He is very aware about how he speaks and makes sure he sounds like he does not have an accent. He is not ashamed of his background per se but also would prefer if it was not flaunted so flamboyantly by his family.  He is all business, all the time.  His girlfriend is Beverly, and they are in a very serious relationship.  He wants her impression of his family to reflect hers, so he can impress her.

Beverly BarnesNelson’s girlfriend.  A beautiful young lady with blond hair with an aristocratic air to her physic and demeanor. A young lady from an upper middle class family from the East Coast.  She has lived a very sheltered life and has not really experienced any cultural clashes.  She is intrigued by what is exotic but is also oblivious to how to interact, making her almost seem like is a bit ditsy.  She loves to meet new people and is always full of energy.
