The Art of Musical Improv

The South Bend Civic Theatre’s Summer Camps give youth from Kindergarten through high school the opportunity to experience the magic of creating live theatre. Camps are taught by experienced and enthusiastic instructors who coach kids on skills including acting, musical theatre, improv, and much more!

Choose from weeklong day camps or extended production camps with the chance to put on a full show!




John Sturk is an improv piano player from Chicago, IL. After graduating from the improv programs at The Second City Training Center and iO Chicago, John turned to focus on music direction. Since then, John has been at the keyboards of Second City Training Center, Comedysportz Chicago, iO Chicago, Storytown Improv, The Annoyance Theater, the Chicago Magic Lounge, The Improv Retreat, Baby Wants Candy, Shamilton, and Laugh Out Loud.

As a teacher, John joined the faculty of the Second City Training Center Chicago in 2022, and has taught courses for CSz Chicago, iO, The Improv Retreat, and Baby Wants Candy.

Summer Camp For Adults


DATE: Saturday, July 15, 2023 (10am-2PM) with follow-up show on Saturday, July 15, 2023 @ 7:30-9:00PM

CLASS CAP: 15 Adults (18+)

COST: $80.00 which includes lunch

LOCATION: Warner Studio Theatre

Scared to sing? Worried about rhyming? Let John show you how to release your fears about musical improv and just GO FOR IT! This Adult Summer Camp is a full experience where students will have the opportunity to hone their improv skills with John in the morning and then show their skills to a live audience in the evening. Must be 18 and over to participate in the fun and basic experience in the art of improv is preferred but not required. 

Topics covered:

  • John’s Five Elements of Music Improv
  • Form of any improvised song
  • Tips for rhyming
  • Creating long form musical narratives
  • Playing short form games

Workshop Schedule:

Saturday, July 15, 2023

10:00 am – 2:00 PM: Musical Improv Workshop (There will be a lunch break with lunch provided)

6:30 PM: Gather for warmups before the show

7:30 PM – 9:00 PM: Public Show in the Warner Theatre



All classes and workshops must have at least 6 participants registered; enrollment lower than six will result in a class cancellation.

  • Cancellation 14 days or more prior to the start of classes: Full tuition will be reimbursed.

  • Cancellation less than 14 days or more prior to the start of classes: 50% tuition reimbursement.

  • Cancellation after the start of classes: No refund.
