CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
General Character Descriptions
Actors any age over 18 years old
Much of the spoken text in this musical is taken directly from the writings (letters, diary entries, military correspondence, etc.) of actual WWI soldiers and historical figures of the time. Each actor will portray a number of these men. Due to this, there is the possibility of some flexibility with casting. So, those nationalities assigned to actor tracks and vocal parts, listed below, may be subject to change.
Actor 1: British, German – The quintessential young man excited to go off to war.
Actor 2: British, Scottish – Charismatic, with a twinkle in his eye
Actor 3: British, Irish – The deep feeling poet
Actor 4: British – Authority figure, sometimes rough, other times jovial or vulnerable
Actor 5: British, Scottish – A father gone off to war – fighting for the folks back home
Actor 6: British, German – Sweet and charismatic
Actor 7: British, French – A likable fellow, highest tenor
Actor 8: British, German, Italian – Stoic and dutiful
Actor 9: British, German, French – Highest ranked among the men
Actor 10: British, Scottish, German – Fun and often sarcastic
3-4 Tenors
4-5 Baritones
2 Basses
*Additional men may be cast in the chorus, who will sing alongside The Vesper Choral
*We are looking for at least one classically trained tenor to portray French opera singer, Victor Granier, who will sing the solo “Minuit Chrétien” (French version of “O Holy Night”)
Do not fret over the accents & have fun at the audition! If you do not wish to attempt an accent that is fine, please still audition. We will work on accents throughout rehearsals, and there are ways the director can work with you to hint at an accent rather than having to adopt a full blown accent.
Sides are attached & will be provided at the audition. There is no need to memorize.
*Some actors may be asked to read an additional scene at auditions not provided in the attached sides.
Music will be taught at auditions
