Girls in The BoaT

By Alice Austen

Directed by Andi Creasbaum

Presented in the Warner Studio

SYNOPSIS:

Girls in the Boat was inspired by the true stories of the U.S. women’s Olympic rowing team. A group of smart, fiery young women fight discrimination and prejudice to compete in the male-dominated sport of rowing, finding an unlikely ally in a taciturn men’s coach. Together, they confront ridicule and overcome obstacles.  Against the rhythm of their oars, these women forge bonds and overcome disagreements in their search for greatness. Despite their diverse backgrounds and politics, they literally pull together to reach their goals in a fast-paced drama that reminds us of what we can all do if we have a common purpose. As our heroines break barriers of race and gender, their newly minted U.S. women’s rowing team goes on to become the most winning sports team in American history.

    CHARACTER INFORMATION/DIRECTOR’S NOTE:

Director Andi Creasbaum is looking for 9 women and 2 men for this production of all races and
ethnicities and various body types and sizes. Ages are VERY roughly 20’s to 50’s for the

Girls in the Boat is reminiscent of a memory play. Following a group of women rowers in a quest
to overcome the patriarchal systems in collegiate rowing and to make it to the world’s largest
stage, the Olympics. It touches on the beginnings of Title IX in college sports and ends with
being the gold medalists at every summer Olympics between 2004 and 2016.

These characters do not have names, only their designations in the boat. This is to help tell the
story of the multiple women who have trained and achieved in this sport. A few also play the
mothers of other rowers. Girl 7 is described in the script as Black. Girl 5 is described in the script
as very tall. Coxswain is described as very short and very loud.

    The women play:
