Synopsis: William Shakespeare’s beloved comic play, about misunderstandings, love and deception, centers
around the courtship and scandal involving young Hero and her suitor, Claudio, but the witty war of
words between Claudio’s friend Benedick and Hero’s cousin Beatrice delight at center stage. Sparkling with sparing wit, blooming love, and trickery from both friend and foe, will Don John’s scheme separate lovers and friends forever, or will it all reveal itself to be MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING?

LEONATO: Governor of Messina
SIGNIOR BENEDICK: a gentleman soldier from Padua, proud, quick tongue and wit
BEATRICE: Niece of Leonato, Quick wit & sharp tongue, uses humor to deflect vulnerability
COUNT CLAUDIO: young lord and soldier from Florence, Looks up to Benedick, a Romantic idealist, but quick-tempered
HERO: Daughter of Leonato, falls in love with/betrothed to Count Claudio, gentle & noble spirit
DON PEDRO: Prince of Aragon
MARGARET: Hero’s waiting-woman & Borachio’s lover
URSULA: Hero’s waiting-woman
SIGNIOR ANTONIO: Leonato’s brother, a jovial, but fiery temper when challenged
DON JOHN: Don Pedro’s brother, a villainous character who sets deception into motion
BORACHIO: Serves Don John, seduces Margaret, thinks up & participates in deception, carnal character
CONRAD: Serves Don John; self-important
DOGBERRY: Master Constable in Messina, ever using the wrong words without realizing, the classic incompetent man placed in a high position
VERGES: Dogberry’s partner/second
GEORGE SEACOAL/FIRST WATCHMAN: leader of the Watch
HUGH OATCAKE/SECOND WATCHMAN: second of the watch
SEXTON (FRANCES SEACOAL): Record keeper
FRIAR FRANCIS: Friar who is to marry Hero &; Count Claudio, devises the plan when Hero is accused
BALTHASAR: Bard/court musician, sings Sigh You No More, Ladies

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Series will be performed in rep. Not all, but MOST, will be cast in both shows, with
shows performed alternating every other night. Don’t let that intimidate you! One or
two may have more substantial roles in both shows, but most will have one larger/one
smaller role… the second may even be a part with no lines, but integral to the
production. Please indicate roles preferred, or “any”, on your audition form. - *Colorblind/color conscience casting, all body types & abilities encouraged to audition
- Accent (British) needed for Sense & Sensibility ONLY. If you’re uncomfortable, just use
your own voice with clear diction. - Both of these shows are fun & clip along, so no need for stuffy Shakespeare. Have fun
with it!
